1. Counter Magic:
For each spell that she knows, Benji can apply an applicable counter-measure. At the moment she can only cast counter spells on herself. Typically, these counter-spells are given form through the application of impermanent runic tattoos. If not drawing energy directly from her Grimoire itself, Benji often uses crystals as quasi-batteries so if she exhausts a crystal’s energy then the spell can fail. She can pre-emptively apply the tattoos to be ‘activated’ at her discretion but once the spell becomes ‘active’ the tattoo will start to fade and may need to be reapplied. Duration depends on the intensity of the attack on her person.
A rather general ‘catch-all’, Benji can cast a shield upon herself that reflects magic back toward the caster - or indeed in any direction. Unfortunately, she cannot control how the spells ‘bounce' - there is every reasonable chance that she could inadvertently redirect the magic toward an ally or an innocent bystander. René , for example, in his role as Martyr was often the victim of her collateral damage.
The strength and duration of the shield is determined by the intensity of the attack upon her, the clarity of her runic tattoo (for example, if it becomes distorted/smudged) and the amount of energy involved. To all intents and purposes, the shield is a bubble and will begin to 'fade' if too much pressure is applied to it; in Benji's case this would be if the spells being directed toward her are too powerful for her to block. For example, she could shield herself against fire-type magic. As a level-two practitioner, if she encountered a level-four fireball, she would not be able to completely defend herself from harm and might incur 2nd or 3rd degree burns. As her shields weaken, her tattoos also start to fade and become indistinct, although they can be reapplied.
With the use of a crystal pendulum (example
) and a map, Benji can locate people and objects. Similar to her Truth from Lies
ability she must set this process in terms of ‘yes’ or ‘no’. By drawing a 4x4 grid over a map she poses the question: “Is the object/person I'm seeking in Quadrant A? Quadrant B? Quadrant C? Quadrant D?”
Assuming she gets a “yes” answer, she then divides that quadrant into four parts as before, labeling them differently this time (for example, using numbers if she used letters before). Asking the same question about each quadrant until she gets a “yes” answer, she repeats the process until she has a small enough quadrant for searching. It is helpful for her to name the quadrants using different things each time, so there is no confusion. She may need to get a map with larger scale to drill down to the point where a search would be worthwhile.
If she does not get a “yes” answer then the object/person may not be on the map or could be blocking her through other means i.e. wards or other metaphysical shielding.
Converse to Divining, Benji can hide herself from being detected through magical means. The degree to which she can successfully block the attempts of the person seeking her depends on their skills, the clarity of her runic tattoo (for example, if it becomes distorted/smudged) and the amount of energy involved. If they are particularly good at Divining then she may not be able to hide herself at all or may only be able to scramble her location into being inaccurate.Notes:
Benji has been a Counter witch since her inception but it was always a bit vague about what she could/could not do.Total points spent: 180 points
