Face Claim
distinguishing features

This section covers details that aren't visible in your face claim, do they have tattoos your FC doesn't? Do they Have scars your FC doesn't? Do they like to wear heels that make them appear taller? Also while you are filling out this section remember that if you are playing a lycanthrope then your character also has a beast form. What kind of animal is it? Does it have distinguishing marks or things you would like to mention? For this section there's no real world minimum but we'd like you to at least try for two paragraphs. Three would probably be better.

This is the first look people get into your character, their bio, so make this part look nice! Tell us if they prefer dresses, pants, skorts, or what have you. It doesn't have to get tedious, no, but shoot for some solid details.

personality

Personality covers how your character behaves. Are they a loner? Do they like to be in a group? Are they the smart ass wherever they go or do they prefer to be a wallflower? When they're in danger what kind of reactions are they likely to engage in? If you hit a road block you can try looking at your character's horoscope if you have their birthday picked out. Sometimes reading about the traits of the sign can give you a few ideas.

Characters evolve as they are played but writing this section can help you put down details and get to know your character. Another good resource for personality is to take personality tests online and answer as your character to see what kind of outcomes that you get. This is not for things they are physically weak to but if they have a phobia you might list it here to explain how they deal with it.

This is three paragraphs and it's long enough to be considered a good personality section. If you have a little less, fine. If you have a little more, also fine. It doesn't have to be everything.

powers

Powers is one of the sections that trip a lot of people up. Relax! It's not that big a deal. The thing is that for powers you want to remember that the descriptions of them should customize them to fit your character. How you use a power, or how it works for you, could be a little bit different from how it works for someone else. For layout I tend to enjoy the header style but you can do different styles if it suits you.

Delete any section here that you don't need for your character (for example if they aren't an alpha/master delete that section)

Basic or General Powers

POWER #1
describe what this power is and how your character uses it. Are they very trained in this power? Or do they lack the control to use it properly? Does this power only last for a certain duration or time or does it take a toll on your character to use it? Put all of that information here.

POWER #2
describe what this power is and how your character uses it. Are they very trained in this power? Or do they lack the control to use it properly? Does this power only last for a certain duration or time or does it take a toll on your character to use it? Put all of that information here.

POWER #3

Alpha, Master, or Necromancer Powers

POWER #1
This section is for ALPHA, MASTER, and NECROMANCER powers only. If your character is not an alpha or a master you can delete this section of the powers. Please note: that new characters (unless they have been given to you by an admin or won in a contest) cannot be Alphas, Masters, or Necromancers there is a point system on=Sinsomnia that will allow you to apply for and buy Alpha, Master, or Necromancer status with points you earn from posting.

POWER #2
describe what this power is and how your character uses it. Are they very trained in this power? Or do they lack the control to use it properly? Does this power only last for a certain duration or time or does it take a toll on your character to use it? Put all of that information here.

weaknesses

Almost every creature, even those that will never die of old age, have weaknesses. For lycanthropes it is silver, burning, and wounds that are instantly fatal. For vampires it is sunlight, holy items, holy ground, decapitation, and a myriad of other things. Humans are very squishy. You can list a few generic ones, that all of a group are weak to, but this section is also for any little problems that might be unique to your character. Are they likely to panic in water and drown?

history

triggers for awesome

History is the second section of the bio that a lot of people groan and moan about. We are not asking for the world's most detailed recounting of your character's history. We don't need to know everything that happened. We do need the highlights, though. For vampires the point they were turned, how they were turned, and things like that are important. What kind of household people grew up in, their childhood, and traumatic events are important. If your history has a trigger for something that might upset people be sure to put a little tag up at the top of it to let people know.

I've put in an example one just to give you an idea of what we're talking about. Some people have things that it hurts them to read - not a lot of us mind - so let's be courteous about it. Some other things that you might be interested in putting into the history are places that your character has visited or are significant to them, people from the past that were important, and their education level.

You don't have to describe high school but it's probably a good idea to at least mention what kind of education that they had. The sky is the limit with your history but anything under three paragraphs is going to get you edits. You can't flush out a character's entire history in three paragraphs! Unless, you know, you're one of those people that likes huge big meaty paragraphs.

Rp Sample

This is exactly what it sounds like. A lot of people like to write a post as if they were going to put it on the normal forum, a starter post, and then actually use it. That's fine if you want to. This area is just to give us an idea of what your writing is like and to (after you've entered your character's life away in this bio) give you that last little push to flesh them out some more before you get going.

If you're running low on ideas for what to put here as your sample here are some prompts: convenience store hold up, ATM spitting out random cash, someone stole your cab, it's raining fish (that has happened before actually), or someone misplaced their child and you need to help get it home. You are not bound to take these or use them. It's just suggestions to try and help. Whatever you write is fine so long as it's in 3rd person.

How to write powers
When writing your unique power please think of these questions when you write them. follow our guides with writing in your owns the powers we have, and touch upon the below questions as well as what we have written.

Answer every question for making your own power.

What does this do?
How does it work? Who does it affect?
Who doesn't it affect?
How can it be defended against? (and more than one please)
How does this affect your character when using it?

A few things to know - You either get magically or physically affecting. The greater the power, the more it affects your character when they use it. Alphas, leaders, and masters are powerful for a reason and they tend to have a certain amount of resistance to powers when the user is weaker than they are. Side effects that occur when using powers are also recommended as we try to make sure no power is overpowered and doesn't have a downside or limitation. We're also asking for more detail other than just vague descriptors in powers so we can see how you plan to use it in character.

only applies to those with more than 5 characters

We do not have a character limit on Sinsomnia – we feel that as long as you can keep up with the characters you have you can make as many as you’d like. We don’t want to stifle your creativity. However, we have noticed that sometimes the creation of characters is more alluring than actually playing and plotting with these characters. Because of that we’ve seen that there are many characters who have been forgotten or aren’t played very often. Because these characters can be taking up ranks, alpha statuses, and desirable playbys we want to make sure all the characters on the site are active.

We don’t want to institute a harsh activity requirement because we feel like these are rarely fair, especially since we all know that real life gets in the way sometimes and it prevents us from posting as much as we would like. We (the staff) feel like we have come up with a solution that is fair to everyone, while also keeping the amount of unplayed characters to a minimum.

The solution is this: After a member has made 5 characters they must be active with all their characters in order to make a new character. We will measure this in two ways: posts and recent threads. For characters with under 50 posts you must have at least one active thread or two recently closed threads when you post your new character bio (this means in the same calendar month you post your new character. For existing characters with over 50 posts you must have at least one active thread or one recently closed thread before you post your new character bio.

If you do not feel like you can continue being active with a character and wish to make a new one, that character must be vacationed before you make a new character and you can bring them back once your new character has reached 25 posts.

So to break it down, to make a new character after you have reached 5 characters you must (have):

  • At least 1 active thread or 2 recently closed one (in the same calendar month as when you are posting the new character) for characters with less than 50 posts. You are required to have 25 posts for at least 3 of out these 5.
  • At least 1 active or 1 recently closed thread for characters with more than 50 posts.
  • Vacation your inactive characters before you post your new character application
These activity requirements are for all your characters.

In order to make a new character after you hit 5 characters your newest character must have at least 25 posts.
